Adding GST to $1,000
If $1,000 is the price before GST: GST = $1,000 × 10% = $100, and the total is $1,100. This is what you would put on an invoice to a customer if you quoted $1,000 + GST.
GST inside $1,000
If $1,000 is the price including GST (like a shop price): GST = $1,000 ÷ 11 = $90.91, and the price before GST is $909.09. Switch the calculator to “Including GST” to see this.

Which one applies to me?
Prices advertised to consumers in Australia must include GST, so a $1,000 TV in a shop already contains $90.91 of GST. Prices between businesses are often quoted “+ GST”, so a $1,000 + GST quote means you pay $1,100. When in doubt, look for “inc. GST” or “ex. GST” on the quote, and ask — it’s a normal question.
Can I claim the GST back?
If you are registered for GST and the purchase is for your business, you can claim the GST as a credit on your BAS: $100 on a $1,100 business purchase. If you are not registered (or it’s a personal purchase), the GST is simply part of the cost.
GST on a quote vs a receipt
Quotes from tradies and suppliers to businesses often say “ex GST”, so a $1,000 quote becomes $1,100 on the invoice. Receipts from shops always include GST, and if the total is over $82.50 they must show the GST amount (or say “total price includes GST”) to count as a tax invoice. For business purchases of $82.50 or less you can claim GST credits with any receipt that shows the supplier and the amount.
Some things in a $1,000 bill may be GST-free — fresh food at a supermarket, a medical consultation, an export — so the GST may be less than $90.91. If you are budgeting a purchase for your business, the real cost after claiming the credit is $1,000 on a $1,100 invoice.
