Super on Paid Parental Leave

Taking time off with a new baby used to leave a gap in your super. Now the government pays super on PPL. Here’s how much, and when it arrives.

Your family

How much?

12% of the Parental Leave Pay you receive — the same rate as the super guarantee. For the full 26 weeks that is $26,122.20 × 12% = $3,134.66. Each parent gets super on their own PPL days.

When is it paid?

The ATO pays it as a lump sum into your nominated super fund after the end of the financial year in which you received PPL — so for PPL received in 2026-27, from July 2027. It is not part of your fortnightly payments, and you don’t need to apply separately.

Who gets it

Parents of children born or adopted on or after 1 July 2025 who receive Parental Leave Pay. Make sure the ATO has your super fund details (check in myGov), or the payment may go to an ATO-held account.

The pre-filled split

20 weeks for the birth parent and 6 for the partner: PPL of $20,094.00 and $6,028.20, super of $2,411.28 and $723.38.

How it’s taxed

It’s treated as a concessional (before-tax) contribution, taxed at 15% in the fund and counted towards your $32,500 concessional cap (2026-27). Over 30 years at a modest return, $3,134.66 can grow to well over $10,000 — a small but real help in closing the gap.

Employer-paid parental leave is separate: whether your employer pays super on it depends on your agreement or policy.

Closing the super gap further

Women retire with noticeably less super on average, and time away caring for children is a big part of that. Other options to consider: a spouse contribution (the working partner can contribute up to $3,000 to the other’s super and may get a tax offset of up to $540), contribution splitting (moving up to 85% of concessional contributions to a partner’s account the following year), and carry-forward concessional contributions if your balance is under $500,000.

Each fund handles these differently, so check with your fund before making a contribution.

Finally, if you have more than one super account, consider consolidating before the PPL super arrives so it doesn’t get split or charged two sets of fees. You can see all your accounts in myGov through the ATO’s super section.
