EPF on ₹50,000 basic salary

Above the ₹25,000 ceiling, the big question is whether your employer pays 12% on your full basic or only on ₹25,000. Here is the difference, in rupees.

Your PF details

Monthly PF on ₹50,000 basic

PF on full basicRestricted PF (on ₹25,000)
Your 12%₹6,000₹3,000
Employer 12%₹6,000₹3,000
… to EPS₹2,083₹2,083
… to EPF₹3,917₹917
Total into EPF each month₹9,917₹3,917

Many large employers contribute on the full basic, but the law only requires 12% on wages up to the ceiling. Check your payslip or your EPF passbook on the EPFO member portal: the “employer share” column shows which applies to you.

The corpus at 58

Starting at 30 with ₹3 lakh already saved, 6% yearly rises and 8.25% interest:

Employer contributes onBalance at 58
Full basic (₹6,000)₹2,73,63,369
Only ₹25,000 (₹3,000)₹76,12,224

(“Restricted PF” means both your 12% and your employer’s are worked out on ₹25,000 only — choose “Only up to ₹25,000” in the calculator.) The difference over a career is large, which is why CTC offers that “include employer PF” on full basic look smaller in hand but are worth more in the long run.

Tax points at this salary

Your own contribution is ₹72,000 a year, well under the ₹2.5 lakh limit, so all interest stays tax-free. Under the old tax regime your 12% counts towards the ₹1.5 lakh 80C limit; under the new regime there is no deduction, but the employer’s contribution is not taxed as long as employer PF + NPS + superannuation stay within ₹7.5 lakh a year.

Keep in mind the projection assumes your pay keeps rising and the rate stays at 8.25%. Re-run it each year with your actual balance from the passbook — it only takes a minute.

CTC, gross and in-hand — where EPF fits

Most offer letters include the employer’s 12% inside the CTC. On ₹50,000 basic that is ₹72,000 a year that never reaches your bank account but builds your PF. Your own 12% is deducted from gross salary, so your in-hand pay is roughly gross minus ₹6,000 PF, professional tax and income tax.

If you are offered a choice between full-basic PF and restricted PF, the restricted option raises your monthly take-home by ₹3,000 but lowers your retirement savings substantially, as the table above shows. A middle path some people take: stay on full PF and adjust other investments, because EPF’s 8.25% tax-free return is hard to beat for the safe part of a portfolio. For partial withdrawals before retirement — for a house, medical needs or education — EPFO has specific rules on years of service and limits.
