Step by step on a ₱1,500 bill
- Remove VAT: ₱1,500 ÷ 1.12 = ₱1,339.29 (VAT of ₱160.71 is removed).
- 20% discount: ₱1,339.29 × 20% = ₱267.86.
- Amount to pay: ₱1,339.29 − ₱267.86 = ₱1,071.43.
Altogether the senior saves about 28.57% of the VAT-inclusive price (because 1 − 0.80 ÷ 1.12 = 0.2857).

A common mistake
Some cashiers take 20% off the VAT-inclusive price (₱1,500 × 80% = ₱1,200) and stop there. That misses the VAT exemption — the correct amount is lower. Another mistake is removing VAT from the whole group bill when only one diner is a senior.
What is covered
- Medicines and vitamins (with prescription for some items), medical and dental services, lab fees.
- Restaurants, fast food and coffee shops — for the senior’s own consumption.
- Hotels, resorts, cinemas, theaters and other recreation.
- Domestic air and sea travel, land transport fares.
- Funeral and burial services for a deceased senior.
Bring your OSCA ID (or a valid ID showing you are 60 or older). Groceries and basic necessities follow a separate 5% special discount rule with a weekly cap, so they are computed differently.
For store owners and cashiers
Record the senior’s name, OSCA ID number and the discount on the invoice. Businesses may deduct the discount as a business expense for income tax, and the sale is reported as VAT-exempt. Training staff on the correct order — remove VAT first, then 20% — avoids complaints and keeps your records correct.
