The simple rule
You want the dollar coupon applied last. If the percentage discount comes first, your coupon keeps its full value. If the coupon comes first, the percentage discount shrinks the coupon too.
Example: an $80 item, 25% off, and a $20 coupon
The calculator above is set to the less favorable order, so you can see the difference.
| Coupon last (better) | Coupon first | |
|---|---|---|
| Step 1 | 25% off $80 = $60.00 | $80 − $20 = $60.00 |
| Step 2 | $60 − $20 = $40.00 | 25% off $60 = $45.00 |
| With Florida tax (6.98% avg) | $42.79 | $48.14 |
Same coupon, same discount, but $5.35 difference at checkout. Applied first, the $20 coupon is only worth $15, because the 25% discount takes a quarter of it away.
How much the order costs you
Before tax, for a few typical deals:
| Price | % off | Coupon | Coupon last | Coupon first | Extra you pay |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $50.00 | 20% | $10.00 | $30.00 | $32.00 | $2.00 |
| $80.00 | 25% | $20.00 | $40.00 | $45.00 | $5.00 |
| $100.00 | 40% | $10.00 | $50.00 | $54.00 | $4.00 |
| $150.00 | 30% | $25.00 | $80.00 | $87.50 | $7.50 |
| $200.00 | 50% | $20.00 | $80.00 | $90.00 | $10.00 |
The extra you pay is always the coupon × the discount percentage. A $20 coupon with 50% off loses $10 of its value if it is applied first.
Who decides the order?
Usually the store does, not you. Many registers and websites apply percentage promotions first and dollar coupons last, but it varies, and some coupons say “applied before other discounts” in the fine print. Here is how to make sure you get the best deal:
- Read the receipt or cart summary. If the coupon line appears before the percentage line, it was applied first.
- Ask politely at the register. A cashier can sometimes re-ring items in the better order.
- Watch “minimum spend” coupons. “$20 off $75” coupons often check the total after the percentage discount. In our example the price falls to $60, which may no longer qualify.
Two percentage discounts are different: they multiply, so their order never matters. Only fixed-dollar coupons are sensitive to order.
Store coupons vs manufacturer coupons and sales tax
A store coupon lowers the price the store charges, so sales tax is calculated on the lower price. A manufacturer coupon is different: the store gets the money back from the manufacturer, so in many states sales tax is charged on the price before the coupon. The rules vary by state. If you are using a manufacturer coupon, tick the box in the calculator to see the more cautious total.
FAQ
Is it better to apply a coupon before or after a percentage discount?
After. Applied last, a dollar coupon keeps its full value. Applied first, the percentage discount reduces the coupon too.
How much is an $80 item with 25% off and a $20 coupon?
$40.00 if the coupon comes off last, or $45.00 if it comes off first. With Florida’s 6.98% average sales tax: $42.79 versus $48.14.
Does the order of two percentage discounts matter?
No. Two percentages multiply, so 25% then 10% is the same as 10% then 25%: 32.5% off in total.
