Ontario adds a surtax of 20% of Ontario tax above $5,818 and a further 36% above $7,446. Manitoba’s basic personal amount phases out between $200,000 and $400,000 of income. Manitoba brackets stay at $47,000 / $100,000 because Manitoba stopped indexing its brackets and basic personal amount from 2025 (CRA 2026 payroll tables, Manitoba Budget 2026; CRA’s general rates page shows indexed figures of $47,564 / $101,200, so check your return).
Your 2026 RRSP room
- 18% of your 2025 earned income, up to the 2026 dollar limit of $33,810
- minus your 2025 pension adjustment
- plus unused room carried forward from earlier years
Contributions made from January 1, 2026 to March 1, 2027 can be deducted on your 2026 return. You can also carry a contribution forward and deduct it in a later, higher-income year. The 2027 limit is $35,390.
How the refund is worked out
The calculator works out your federal and provincial tax with and without the RRSP deduction. The difference is your tax saving — the “refund”. Because each dollar comes off the top of your income, the saving equals your marginal rate, and a large contribution can cross into a lower bracket.
FAQ
How much tax will I get back on a $10,000 RRSP contribution?
It depends on your marginal rate. In Ontario with $90,000 of income, $10,000 saves about $2,965 (29.65%). In British Columbia with $120,000 of income, a $5,000 contribution saves about $1,790 (part of it falls in lower brackets).
What is the RRSP limit for 2026?
18% of your 2025 earned income, up to $33,810, minus your pension adjustment, plus unused room carried forward.
What is the RRSP deadline for the 2026 tax year?
Monday, March 1, 2027.
Does the new 14% federal rate change my RRSP refund?
Only in the lowest bracket: a contribution that reduces income below $58,523 now saves 14% federal tax instead of 14.5%. Higher brackets are unchanged.
