The example, step by step
- Your 2026 room: 18% of $100,000 earned in 2025 = $18,000 (under the $33,810 cap). A $10,000 contribution fits.
- Your marginal rate: 20.5% federal (income between $58,523 and $117,045) + 10% Alberta (income between $61,200 and $154,259) = 30.5%.
- The deduction: taxable income goes from $100,000 to $90,000 — still inside both brackets.
- Your saving: $10,000 × 30.5% = $3,050 ($2,050 federal + $1,000 Alberta).

How does Alberta compare?
At $100,000 of income, Alberta’s 10% band gives a refund of $3,050 on $10,000. That is a little more than British Columbia ($2,820, where the 7.7% band applies at this income) and a little less than Ontario ($3,058), Saskatchewan ($3,300), Manitoba ($3,325) or Quebec ($3,612). A lower provincial rate means each RRSP dollar saves a bit less, but it also means you keep more of your pay all year.
When will I get the money?
If you file online in early 2027 and set up direct deposit, CRA usually pays refunds within about two weeks. If you would rather not wait, you can ask CRA to reduce the tax taken off your pay for regular contributions with form T1213.
