SSY ₹1,000 a month

You don’t need a big amount to start. ₹1,000 a month builds a meaningful, tax-free fund for your daughter. Here is what it adds up to.

The numbers

₹1,000 a month is ₹12,000 a year, or ₹1,80,000 over the 15 deposit years. At 8.2%, the account matures at about ₹5,74,570 — the interest is more than double what you paid in.

The table assumes the year’s total is in the account by 5 April. If you pay monthly instead, the result is a little lower — a few percent — because later instalments earn interest for fewer months in that first year.

Can I pay monthly?

Yes. Post offices and banks accept any number of deposits in a year, in multiples of ₹50, as long as the yearly total is between ₹250 and ₹1,50,000. Many banks let you set up a standing instruction from your savings account, and India Post supports deposits through the IPPB app.

Who should choose ₹1,000 a month?

It is a comfortable amount for many families and still gives a solid sum for higher education at 18 (when you can withdraw up to half). If your income grows, you can raise the deposit any year — there is no need to fix the amount at the start.

How to open an account

Visit any post office or an authorised bank (SBI, Bank of Baroda, PNB, ICICI, HDFC and others) with your daughter’s birth certificate, your Aadhaar and PAN, address proof and the first deposit. Many banks also let you open an SSY account online if you already bank with them. One account per girl child is allowed, and the account can be transferred anywhere in India free of charge.

After that, deposits can be made by cash, cheque or online transfer. Keep the passbook updated or check the balance in your bank’s app; interest is credited once a year at the end of March. If you move abroad, the account continues, but check the latest rules for non-resident guardians.

A small, steady deposit also teaches a habit. Many parents show their daughter the passbook on her birthday each year — by the time she is a teenager she can see for herself how the balance has grown, mostly from interest.
