Your total tenant payment is the higher of 30% of monthly adjusted income or 10% of gross monthly income. Adjusted income subtracts $480 per dependent and $525 for an elderly or disabled family (plus some medical and child care costs). The voucher covers the difference up to the local payment standard. Most new vouchers go to households under 30% of area median income, and waiting lists are often long.

How to apply

Apply to your local public housing agency (PHA) – find it at hud.gov. Many PHAs open their waiting lists only a few days a year.
