Example
The calculator is pre-filled with a daughter aged 4 and ₹60,000 a year from 2026. When she turns 18 (year 14 of the account), the balance is about ₹15,94,710, so up to about ₹7,97,355 could be withdrawn for college. If nothing is withdrawn, the account matures in 2047 at about ₹28,72,848.
Who operates the account?
The guardian until she turns 18. After that she operates it herself, after submitting her KYC documents to the post office or bank.
What happens after maturity?
The account stops earning interest after 21 years, so close it on time. Everything you receive is tax-free.
If you stop depositing
An account with less than ₹250 deposited in a year becomes “in default”. You can revive it within the 15-year deposit period by paying ₹250 for each missed year plus ₹50 penalty per year. A defaulted account still earns the scheme rate on its balance.
Rules from the Sukanya Samriddhi Account Scheme, 2019. Interest rate assumed constant at 8.2%; it is reviewed every quarter.
Documents to keep ready
For a partial withdrawal you need the passbook, the withdrawal form from the post office or bank, and proof of admission or a fee demand letter from the institution. The amount can be paid directly to the institution or to the account holder. For closure on marriage, a declaration on non-judicial stamp paper and proof of age (she must be at least 18 on the date of marriage) are needed.
When the account matures, the balance plus interest is paid to the account holder — your daughter. Because the money becomes hers at 18, it can be a good moment to help her open her own savings account and talk about money: the maturity amount can be the start of her own financial life.
